How to block distracting apps on iPhone

Pick the apps you want to block, and an app built on Apple's Screen Time frameworks puts a system shield over them. FocusPass does this, and adds one thing: when you really need an app, you can use a short timed Pass. When the Pass ends, the app is blocked again.

Updated

Interactive demo: tap a protected app, then choose Go Back or Use a Pass and watch the Pass expire and relock. Nothing on your phone is blocked.

Two built-in ways to block apps on iPhone

iOS has two options. Screen Time in Settings lets you set App Limits and Downtime. Third-party apps with Apple's Family Controls permission can put a shield over apps you choose, using the same system.

App Limits work well as a daily budget. The weak spot is the "Ignore Limit" button, which is one tap away and gives you 15 more minutes or the rest of the day. Many people learn to tap it without thinking.

What an app blocker adds

An app blocker makes getting in a deliberate choice. FocusPass shows a shield with two buttons: GO BACK, or USE A PASS. A Pass is timed (for example 5, 10 or 15 minutes) and you get a set number each day.

  • Choose apps, categories or websites with Apple's own picker.
  • Pick a daily plan, such as 3 Passes of 10 minutes.
  • Optional reason for each Pass (reply, check, post) as a reminder to yourself.
  • The app locks again automatically when the Pass ends, even if FocusPass is closed.

Platform limits worth knowing

FocusPass uses Apple's Screen Time frameworks (Family Controls, Managed Settings and Device Activity). iOS shows the shield and handles relocking; FocusPass never sees what you do inside other apps, and Apple doesn't let apps read that.

If Screen Time is managed by a parent or an organization, their settings take priority over FocusPass.

Is FocusPass free?

Yes. The free version includes shields, Go Back, timed Passes, automatic relocking, one Wallet, one Focus Zone, one Deep Focus session a day and 7 days of insights. FocusPass Pro adds more Wallets, Zones, custom rules and full history.
