Hard blocking vs timed access

A hard block keeps an app closed until a schedule or session ends. Timed access keeps it blocked by default but allows short, limited openings that close automatically. Hard blocks suit focus sessions; timed access suits apps you need now and then. FocusPass uses both: Deep Focus and Focus Zones for hard blocks, Passes for timed access.

Updated

Interactive demo: tap a protected app, then choose Go Back or Use a Pass and watch the Pass expire and relock. Nothing on your phone is blocked.

Hard blocking

Best for a defined stretch of work, study or sleep, when you don't need the app at all.

  • Strong: there's no decision to make during the session.
  • Weak spot: if you suddenly do need the app, the only way out may be turning the blocker off, and it often stays off.

Timed access

Best for apps with real uses, such as messages, community updates or work posts, that also pull you into scrolling.

  • The block stays on by default.
  • Each opening has a fixed length and ends without willpower.
  • A daily number of Passes keeps exceptions from becoming the rule.

Combining them in FocusPass

Use a Focus Zone or a Deep Focus session for the hours that need full protection, and a Pass plan for the rest of the day. During Deep Focus, ordinary Passes are paused, and Focus Rescue gives one short exit per session for something truly essential.

Common questions

Which is better, a hard block or timed access?

It depends on the app and the moment. Hard blocks fit focused sessions. Timed access fits apps you need occasionally. Many people use both.

Can FocusPass make it impossible to unblock an app?

No, and it doesn't try to. Emergency access and Turn Off All Protection always work. FocusPass makes opening an app a deliberate choice; it doesn't lock you out of your own phone.
